Ghost Projects – Visions, Promises and Failures in African Spatial Development Initiatives

23 November 2022, 13:00 – 14:00.

Research seminar. St Mary’s Quad, Lecture Room 2.

The seminar discusses the power of vision and developmental dreams in East Africa. The focus will be on growth corridors, infrastructures, and hydro-development schemes, i.e., activities that are often labelled as megaprojects. Politicians and development agencies present these projects as blueprints for a better future. However, many of these projects never materialize, at least not as originally planned. „Ghost Projects“, as I would call them, are not visible, but they do leave traces on the ground. In that sense, the African continent is spotted with ghosts, white elephants, and ruins of development.

Speaker
Prof Detlef Müller-Mahn (University of Bonn), who will be visiting the School of Geography and Sustainable Development through an ERASMUS staff mobility programme.
