We hope to see many of you at the first St Andrews Sustainability Summit, which is being held in Upper and Lower College Hall on Friday 13th September 2024, 14:00-17:30 (end of Fresher’s week).
More information about the STACEES stall will follow soon!
Don’t buy in eco doom and gloom; there is a lot to do for sure, but doing what is needed just takes people to do it. The St Andrews Sustainability Summit is your chance – at the very least, to find out what we are doing at the University of St Andrews for a sustainable future – and at the very most, this is your opportunity to get involved to make this happen. The program is simple – come along between 2 and 5 pm and see what is happening at various stalls. If you come for only an hour then make it between 3 and 4pm, when you will also hear some speed introductions from key individuals who are responsible for sustainable St Andrews.
14:00 Doors Open – come and browse the stalls in Upper and Lower College Hall and talk to the sustainability people working at St Andrews and find out how to get involved.
15:00 A brief overall introduction and welcome in Lower College Hall
15:05 Speed introductions – Representatives from the various groups and important individuals that are tasked with sustainability at the University will give 1 minute introductions to themselves and what they do in the University. They will then be available for questions and chat one to one immediately afterwards.
15:30 – 17:00 Further browsing, mingling, networking, and being informed at the various stalls as you wish.
STACEES stall information
We are grateful to all those joining us on Friday to discuss their projects with summit attendees! Come along to find out more about the exciting work of the following colleagues:
- Biodiversity at the St Andrews Botanic Garden, with Olivia Ortlieb, (student intern, School of Computer Science and Department of Philosophy)
Come along to find out about Olivia’s workusing DIY technologies (such as a raspberry pi camera and microphone) to capture biodiversity activities at St Andrews Botanic Gardens. Video and audio material will be available for attendees to watch/listen. - Research on sustainability by Dr Loraine Clark, (Lecturer, School of Computer Science)
Placed within the field of Human Computer Interaction, Loraine’s research focuses on harnessing technology to design interactive tangible experiences with technology that connect us to sustainable narratives. Attendees will be able to watch/listen to video material and engage with small interactive prototypes and comics. - VR climate experience with Dr Alan Miller (Lecturer, School of Computer Science)
The Open Virtual Worlds group has been using digital technologies to address the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This has included contributing to Sustainable Communities by making heritage exciting and accessible with virtual reality and augmented reality technologies. We have also been addressing climate action by creating simulations of alternative climate futures. These help encourage climate action. Please come to the stall and experience virtual time travel into St Andrews past and into potential climate futures. - Green Shores (Dr Helena Simmons, Green Shores Engagement Officer)
Green Shores at the University of St Andrews works closely with NatureScot and significant landowners to restore saltmarsh habitat across Scotland. This nature-building approach will improve ecological status, provide flood and erosion control, store carbon to combat climate change, and increase biodiversity value. Join us to learn more about saltmarshes, our work, and how you can get involved! - The STACEES network
Laura Pels Ferra (STACEES Coordinator) and Sarah Bennison (STACEES Research Fellow) will be on hand to talk about the STACEES network and to display materials from/for our members.
